I hope 2018 is off to a good start for you and your loved ones. January is often the time when peoples attention turn towards fitness goals so I’ve put together a quick roundup of some the best online training programmes in my humble opinion some of which I’ve done and others come highly recommended. I’m not on commission for any of these sites I just want you to be a healthy happy you. One my clients said to me “You have to be brave to get old” which has always stuck with me and as I get older not falling apart has become more of a priority. The old saying use it or lose really rings true. Juggling work and life can be tricky and more of my training is done at home. Remember not all workouts are created equally so here we go in no particular order.
This is completely free and is designed to get you off the couch and running in just 9 weeks. There is an app to download which talks you through the entire process. There are lots of local running groups all around Bristol. My wife has recently done the couch to 5k and really enjoyed it. Once you can run 5K you could sign up to one of the park runs in Bristol.
I’ve just signed up to the foundations course as my fitness goal for this year to gain more strength and mobility. I have no burning ambition to be a gymnastic but the principles of the sports and built on a solid foundation of strength and mobility. Its going to be a long journey but its going to be fun. Gymnastic bodies has been created by Coach Summers the ex USA Olympics coachbut redesigned for the adult population. The depth of knowledge and thought is impressive throughout with access to a forum, thousands of videos, paced progressions, weighted mobility drills and workout software creating workout programmes for you. There are a variety of programmes to buy from handstands, fundamentals to the stretch series. There are also some great articles and podcasts which I cant recommend enough which can be found on the website.
Run by Tim and Jacko offer a series of sensibly priced e-books bodyweight training programmes from handstands, muscles ups, back lever and yes A FREE GUIDE TO CALISSTHEICS which is well worth a look. They have a good youtube channel and offer workshops around the UK. I use a few of their exercises now as part of my patient rehab programmes. I’ve just bough their muscle up ebook so Ill let you know how I get along.
Described as the netflix of yoga which is a subscription based service offering online yoga . On offer is a huge variety of yoga styles by world class teachers all done in the comfort of your own home.
This is another subscription based service offering online training videos. Cody has a wide range on offer from cardio, HIT, yoga, pilates, back rehabilitation, weightlifting and is developing all the time. I’ve done the 60 day calisthenics programme and was great.
This is run by James Wilson who is a strength and conditioning coach based in the USA. He has a variety of online training programmes aimed a mountain bikers who want to improve their fitness and fun on the trail. He has a good youtube channel with some free workouts and tips. I’ve done his MTB Kettlebell Conditioning Program last year which I can recommend to any rider wanting to get fitter and faster on the trail. It has also made me love kettlebell training.
This is run by James who is a Sports Rehab Therapist and Running Coach. His focus is on running rehabilitation. On his site there are tons of advice of running technique and rehab with some great 30 day challenges. Many runners think that by doing more running and running alone they will get better at running, they wont. All runners need to incorporate strength and conditioning into their running programme to remain injury free due to the high loads and stress on the lower limb.
When talking about health its not all muscle we have a mind too which also can be trained in a positive way. I’ve done a fair bit of mediation in the past and can recommend it to everyone and anyone. Headspace is an app that teaches you how to meditate. It’s about training in awareness and getting a healthy sense of perspective. You’re not trying to turn off your thoughts or feelings.
