What Will The Massage Feel Like?

It depends on the techniques used. In general a massage session may start with broad, flowing strokes which will help to calm your nervous system and relax exterior muscle tension. As your body becomes relaxed, pressure will gradually be increased to relax specific areas and relieve areas of muscular tension. You should communicate immediately if you feel any discomfort so that another approach may be taken. Massage is most effective when your body is not resisting.

Does massage hurt?

Generally it does not, but quite frequently the therapist will find a tense muscle group that needs a bit more pressure in order to facilitate a release; the therapist will ask you to communicate your feelings during the massage to make sure you are kept within a comfortable pain zone at all times.

What should I expect following treatment?

Please note that on occasion there may be a number of natural reactions that can occur after treatment. These can include

  • Tenderness around the treated areas.
  • Increased irrations around the treated area.
  • Heat or redness around the treated area.

All of these reactions are quite normal and are part of the normal healing process. These symptons usually last between 24 and 72 hours.

Will I Be Covered During The Session?

You will be properly draped at all times to keep you warm and comfortable. Only the area being worked on will be exposed.

What shall I wear?

It doesn’t really matter. It is worth noting that for the physical examination that you will need to undress down to your underwear so wear something appropriate. I usually have a spare of shorts just in case.

What Parts of My Body Will Be Massaged?

This will be discussed in the consultation where the outcomes for the session will be decided. For example a typical full body session will include work on your back, arms, legs, feet, hands, head, neck, and shoulders. If you are uncomfortable with being massaged in any area, just inform the therapist of your wishes and the therapist will adjust the massage accordingly.

How often should I have a massage?

This will be discussed with you to determine what is best for the needs of your body; taking into consideration stress levels, activities and overall health, as well as budget parameters.

What Should I Do During The Massage Session?

Make yourself comfortable. The practitioner will either gently move you or tell you what is needed throughout the session (such as lifting your arm). Many people just close their eyes and completely relax. Others like to talk during their session. Feel free to ask the practitioner questions about massage in general or about the particular technique you are receiving.

Where Will My Massage Session Take Place?

The session will take place in one of my clinics.  Your massage session will take place in a warm, comfortable, quiet room.
